Success Strategies in Online Business

Do you have your own home-based online business? What are your reasons in setting up your online business? How is your business doing? Frankly, do you really know how to run it?

Everyone has a reason in launching a home-based online business. Of course, the main motivation is to make money. The promise is that an online business is open to the world 24 hours everyday and everyone is a customer. This translates into a potential windfall of cash.

With a customer market base as large as that and an unlimited "store hours", has anyone wondered why some online businesses floundered? Or that they simply exist, floating around in the vast cyberspace market?

Of course, success stories come in at regular intervals. Some kids have turned into multi-millionaires almost overnight. An old hand somehow discovered a market niche and is now awash in cash. Most of them looked like they only had one idea or two and yet they seemed to be runaway successes.

What makes the difference between winners and losers in online business ventures?
Simply stated, those who won have devised their own strategies and plans and had the guts to act on them.

Business is business, online or otherwise

The rest failed to recognize the fact that what they are doing is business. Just like any other forms of business, there are time-tested principles that need to be followed in order for anyone to succeed.

Sadly, most people thought - and some still think - that an online business is an easy do-it-yourself venture where one can make money with just a modicum of work. What's more, they thought that money can be made in such a short time without the use of good old business guidelines.

Some - still holding on to their jobs or other concerns - unwittingly make themselves think and feel that their online business is a 'hobby'. They fail to bring their full attention needed to make it totally work.

Like any other business, decisions are needed on such important things as time management, cash flows, advertising and promotions, customer services, product testing, updates and maintenance, profits, back investments, and others. These cannot be done if you are working "part-time".

Communications is vital to any business, and in today's online commerce, it is a lifeline. Customers must have ways of contacting you and your people to answer their questions. This will establish that company-and-customer trust and confidence. It is an opportunity to know them. It is also a sign of professionalism.

Customer is still king

Just as in a real world setting, home-based online business still follows the basic strategy of filling your customers' need. This means that you sell something of value to them.
It also means you know how to market your product to attract potential customers to your site and turn them into paying customers.

There is also a need to keep yourself sensitive to what works and what does not. After breaking down every process and analyzing them, you would know the reasons why. Making the appropriate changes would not fall into a guessing game.

When making these changes, you also need to do them one at a time. The results will tell you what the next change would be, or if there is need to have one. This is one way of keeping track of everything you decide on.

Monitoring everything gives you the position to react correctly to customer needs, keep up with the current trends, and make adjustments swiftly enough. Managing your online business also means you have to be ahead of your competitors.

Following these basic business strategies can guarantee you enough chances of success. They provide a firm groundwork to which you can build on your online business. This, plus your decision to go full-time, can point your way to a highly profitable business.

Can You Make Money Online?

To so many people that question is a fairly tough one as at the moment there are an awful lot of people online who are not making money online. In fact it is true to say that there are a great many who cannot even earn enough to cover their daily bills. Let alone give them a lifestyle that many dream of. So not only is it difficult for them, it makes it extremely difficult for their families as well. Working at the computer for many hours at a stretch is not an easy task especially when there is a whole world outside and it is passing you by.

For those who are thinking that they will never ever make enough money online to even cover their bills let alone leave their day job, (if they have not left it already!), it may seem like a daunting task indeed. Well I for one can testify that it can be a long hard struggle especially if you have to learn everything and do not have the means to either enlist the help of friends or outsource their work. So the question is can you make money online?

Yes you can but it is not easy by any means despite what all the gurus tell you! They will tell you that you can earn instant riches overnight and sometimes that may appear to be possible.
Usually however, it is not possible, to become rich overnight.

Sometimes it can take months or even years and in extreme cases maybe never! As a job it appears to be fantastic when you first start as you are usually all fired up and raring to go and you are enthusiastic with every product or service that comes along and with everything that you do to get started.

Also about 98% of us online usually try to re-invent the wheel or look for something new to do because we get carried away by the sheer volume of information, products and services out there. That is why most of us try to find something new and out of the ordinary and then by doing this you are actually not doing yourself any favors because of the time and energy that you waste by trying to be different or even original!

It took me a very long time to actually learn to go with the flow. In other words when you start you do not need to re-invent wheels, products or services as nearly everything that is required, wanted or needed is out there if we just learn to look for it.

Same question? So can you make money online? Yes you can but you have to do the groundwork and gather information and then you have to act on the information that you have found whilst doing the groundwork. This means that you have to decide what it is you want to do online and then be focused enough to do it.

When you can do that then you need to see what other people are doing and get ideas or learn from what they are doing. Do not copy or rip anything off but see if there is anything out there that you would like to do then see if it can either be improved or enhanced to make it better than what it is at the moment.

This does not matter whether it is a product or a service as this is entirely up to you. Leave re-inventing the wheel until you have made your money and can sit back and relax a bit. Once you have done the groundwork or research as it is commonly called you then need to be aware of what you need to get things started and then you need to be focused enough to make sure that you stay on track. You can ask anyone who is anyone and they will tell you that you must stay focused and work at it.

When you do that you will start to make money, maybe slowly at first but gradually it will come. The thing that you must not do is give up even when all around you people are saying that it cannot be done! Do not give up.

To your success.

How You Can Limit Your Risk

When you start a business in challenging economic times, you’ll want to limit your risk as much as possible. There are several ways to go about this, but here are my top recommendations:

Get it right at the beginning. A lot of budding business owners skip crucial steps on their way to a business launch. I can’t tell you how many clients have come to me, a year or two into their businesses, without having set up their companies with the Secretary of State, the IRS, or having met with an attorney to help them set up their operating agreements. These are things that could get you in a lot of trouble if you don’t do them the right way.

There are other steps that won’t necessarily get you into trouble, but may cause some headaches if you don’t get them right. Branding is an excellent example of one of the most-missed (and most misunderstood) steps in entrepreneurialism. It’s also one of the things that can make or break your company. Choose a generic business name like “ABC Consulting” or create a brand that doesn’t intrigue your target market and you’ll start your business heading down the wrong path.

Choose an industry that’s hot or one that’s a “need.” Generally, you want to go with the industry you know best, but at the same time, you can’t ignore what most business experts define as the wave of the new future. Currently, the hottest trends are green businesses, health care, natural beauty, discount retail and luxury, credit and debt management, and technology. If you can find a way to spin what you already know into one of these hot business areas, you’ll take advantage of the coming upsurge in these industries.

On the other hand, I also believe in going after the “needs” of your consumers. For example, I once worked with a guy who was a chimney sweep in the winter (something people need) and a custom SUV builder in the summer (a luxury people want). His winter need-based business was one that provided enough income for the whole year, just in case his want-based business waned in the summer.

Start with a low-risk business model. When I work with a client to design a new business, we typically use what I call a “leap-frogging” or “dovetailing” approach. This is where you start your business using a low-risk business model and build from there, using the income from the first model to fund expansion and growth into more complex business models. This approach almost always allows my clients to start their own businesses without seeking any type of funding from lending institutions, venture capitalists, or other investors.

Plan ahead. If you lose your job, there isn’t much you can do about that. And in this economy, you’d have to work a part-time job in addition to your regular full-time job to save up enough for the six to twelve months of living expenses I generally recommend when clients want to start a business they can work full-time from the beginning. But if you can keep your job and start your business part-time, you’ll reduce your risk substantially. This allows you to maintain a steady income while you’re building your business, and eventually, you can make the transition to being self-employed, full-time.

Market research can save you a lot of time and heartache. Before you head into any business startup, you want to know your market inside out. More than that, you want to know your target market. There are lots of ways to do the research. You can do your own research (called “primary research”) or you can use information compiled by others (“secondary research”). Both have their pros and cons, but the questions you want to answer are:

  • Who is my target market?
  • What do they want?
  • Can I deliver it to them?
  • If I deliver what they want, will they buy it?

Leverage free and inexpensive marketing methods to build your business. A lot of new entrepreneurs develop complicated, expensive marketing campaigns before realizing how many ways there are to get the word out about their businesses without spending a fortune. And with the power of the Internet literally at our fingertips, it’s easier now than ever to build awareness for your brand. However, that doesn’t mean you should go out and build a giant Twitter following. There are so many online options, but all of them may not be appropriate for your target market.

Get the right help. Before you launch a company, you want to find professionals who can help you start on the right foot. There are countless people out there calling themselves “consultants” and you have to be careful who you choose. The ideal business consultant for you is someone who understands a lot of different business models, especially the low-risk ones, and who can help you figure out the model that suits you best. You want someone you find personable, someone who knows what they’re doing, and someone you can trust.

In addition, make sure they don’t make promises that are too good to be true. A lot of business “experts” I’ve seen lately offer what amounts to “get rich quick schemes,” while others offer such vague information that you’re compelled to keep buying more books and products to get to the “real” information….which never actually comes. Instead of wasting your time on these folks, find someone genuine, real, and honest, who may not promise you the sun, moon and stars super-fast, but who can help you build a solid, stable income with real growth potential. Work one-on-one with them to develop a sound business model and a strong brand with a viable marketing strategy that you can easily implement. A good business consultant will know how to work with whatever budget you have and tailor solutions to your needs. Plus, they should have an army of other professionals who can also work within your budget, but still offer high quality work.

Build your team. Speaking of other professionals, you will need your own little army. In addition to a business consultant, you’ll also want an accountant, an attorney, a graphic designer and a web designer, and you may also want a virtual assistant and some other consultants, most of whom your business consultant probably has access to.

Starting a business in an uncertain economy can feel risky, and it certainly has stopped a lot of people from moving forward with great ideas. But if you look at history and remember that some of the most solid businesses today were started in just such an economy, mitigate your risk factors and hire the right professionals from the start, you’ll give yourself a fantastic leg up on your competition, and set yourself up for success.
